is principally designed to secure revenue and build bigger universities. This trend has led to unrestricted growth in universities, which can, in fact, act against the interests of academic research. Of particular concern is the increasing casualisation of employment, affecting both research and teaching. Educational change has often arisen alongside national or even transnational crises. Of course, Raewyn Connell could not have predicted the current coronavirus situation, which is disrupting universities throughout the world. For the first time, most students are learning individually at a distance. There are now fears that universities will have to restructure once again in order to survive. Whether this transformation will promote the “good university”, or merely become another version of Facebook, remains to be seen.
