Information technology’s ubiquitous presence in American life has spurred academics and journalists alike to fill a gaping void in a critical understanding of how technology is being developed and deployed, and with what impacts. Silicon Valley has promulgated accounts of technology as positively disruptive, as enabling new forms of entrepreneurism, as smoothly functioning systems, and as the inevitable result of progress. The depth to which this narrative has pervaded society is attributable to at least three major factors. First, technology entrepreneurs have capitalized on a general lack of technical expertise and uncertainty among regulators and the public about how new technologies actually work, particularly artificial intelligence and machine learning. Second, Silicon Valley wields significant economic, cultural, and political power that until recently has gone largely uncontested. Third, an ahistoricism toward capital-labor relations and long-standing labor market trends obscures the context in which new technologies in the workplace should be set. Collectively, the books reviewed for this editorial essay go a long way in rectifying this situation. Three focus on the intersection of technology and work (Gigged, Hustle and Gig, Ghost Work); three examine the creation and application of algorithms in a broad range of social processes beyond work, such as welfare eligibility, homeless service provision, and teacher evaluations based on standardized testing (Automating Inequality, Artificial Unintelligence, and Weapons of Math Destruction). Although they cover a wide range of technology contexts, what is common across these books is a direct confrontation with Silicon Valley narratives about the nature of technology and its effects on society, which interrupts the notion that technology’s transformative impacts on social, economic, and political spheres are both inevitable and inherently good.
