‘What a time to live in Ireland’: this is what I have often thought in the past months as the ‘abortion referendum’ approached. On 25 May 2018, Irish voters were called to cast their yes or no vote to the proposal of repealing the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. The amendment equated the life of the foetus to the life of the pregnant person, de facto criminalising abortion. A vast majority voted in favour of removing the amendment, decriminalising abortion and opening up the possibility for Parliament to legislate on the matter.
