The Renunciation is a performed reading that intervened respectfully but determinedly in the reflective space that is occupied by the Angelus. Despite efforts to secularise our social and public spaces or, at the very least, to ensure that no single faith/non-faith dominates them to the exclusion or disadvantage of others, the Angelus continues to peal out on our streets and in many of our hospitals and schools in commemoration of a well-known Biblical story: the Annunciation. The Angelus apparently commemorates the incarnation of Jesus via Mary’s ear on her hearing of God’s request to bear his son from the angel Gabriel. We hear it anywhere there is a residue of Catholic influence in our society. This work was developed by the home|work Collective as a challenge to that influence, garnering the title The Renunciation.
