Admittedly, the book invites some criticism. First, although the three data sets are comparable in terms of word count, the size of each data set is relatively small. As we can see in the analysis in Chapter 4, due to the limited size, the frequencies of several some clusters are zero in one of the data sets, which might render the comparison between the data sets statistically insignificant and have the danger of over-interpretation of the results. Second, the comparison of L1 and L2 speakers in the use of some in this book is largely confined to the distribution of some clusters and some groups. It might be more revealing and insightful if the authors pointed out the differences in the pragmatic functions of some by the three groups of speakers. Despite these minor issues, this book does a great job in providing a thorough analysis of the elasticity nature of some used by L1 and L2 speakers in educational settings, and it is also a useful reference book for students and researchers of discourse studies, particularly for those who take a pragmatic perspective.
