power, mainly due to its dynamic examination of interlocutors’ communication in certain cognitive and social–cultural contexts rather than a static study of the text per se. The volume expands the scope of the pragmatic interface study, adding to the topics such as pragmatics and gesture studies, pragmatics and Internet-mediated communication and pragmatics and translation studies. It also covers a variety of research methods such as visual analysis (based on video record of participants’ performance in interactions) and corpus analysis, which provide strong supports for the reliability of the research results. A further advantage is that the volume broadens the horizon of study in both pragmatics and other related fields. However, this volume also has limitations. For reasons of space, it excludes some traditional but popular topics, such as semantic-pragmatic interface, syntactic-pragmatic interface and cognitive-pragmatic interface, as well as some topics which attract great attention at present, such as interlanguage acquisition and usage-based construction. Besides, certain pragmatic theories (such as speech act theory) are given preference, leaving other theories (such as deixis, presupposition) underexplored. Moreover, a multilingual corpus (rather than English-dominance), diversified methodology (rather than traditional pragmatic qualitative research), and various theoretical perspectives (such as intercultural pragmatics) may enrich the future study on pragmatic interfaces. This volume can be used as a coursebook or additional reading for college senior students who are interested in pragmatics, or postgraduates majoring in linguistics. It can also be an introductory or reference book for interested researchers.
