ABSTRACT

Using an intersectional queer theory lens, the participant-researcher-author employs critical autoethnography to argue that refusal as a strategy for wayward curating is an imperative in infiltrating racialised expectations of creativity within contemporary art. She presents two case studies, which focus on curatorial care work as a decolonial aspiration. Underlining this research is an exploration of how black, People of Colour and Queer Trans Intersex People of Colour artist-curators are working towards political and collective practices based on mutual care, friendship, rest and empathy. These curatorial practices act as contestations to the hegemonic principals of contemporary art that have historically been based on exclusion and erasure. Key to this betrayal is considering curating through care as an emancipatory ritual for self-actualisation.
