Furthermore, the local portion of this history equates “jute and peasant life” entirely with Muslims, leaving out non-Muslim social actors and ideologies that were certainly present in the period under review. Whether the context of “global capital” is the best framework in which to understand the history of jute, and whether the precise nature of the Islam practised at this time is best understood as “agrarian Islam”, will likely be debated by future scholars in the field. These issues aside, Ali’s work will likely inspire deeper studies of jute, East Bengal and the many histories contained in that place, catalysed by that fibre.
