The global pandemic caused by the corona or COVID-19 virus and continuing at the time of writing this editorial (June 2020) has affected virtually every aspect of people’s lives: work, family, schooling, social contacts, consumption, and more. All have not been hit equally: far from being a great leveller, the pandemic has further highlighted the deep-rooted social and economic inequalities that exist within countries and globally, which in many countries and regions have been aggravated by limitations of citizens’ basic social and political rights.
