Dual-polarization operating hybrid plasmonic 2×2 multimode interferometer with mode converter for SOI platform

We propose a compact 2×2 multimode interferometer (MMI) based on hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPW) and a mode converter (MC) to integrate this MMI on SOI platform. Both devices can operate at TE/TM states of polarization (SOP). The height of the dielectric interlayer, the width and length of HPW-MMI are optimized to be 100 nm, 1.84 μm and 4.01 μm. At λ = 1550 nm, the MMI exhibits the transmissions of 82% and 74%, the transmission imbalances of 0.57 dB and 0.23 dB, the extinction ratios of 31.77 dB and 32.08 dB, and the phase errors of 4.06° and 2.80°, for TE/TM SOP, respectively. The MC transforms the photonic waveguide modes to the corresponding HPW modes, as the inputs to the MMI. At λ=1550 nm, the MC exhibits the transmissions of 94.5% and 72.2%, the conversion efficiencies of 99.4% and 93.0%, and the extinction ratios of 16.19 dB and 13.71 dB, for TE/TM SOP, respectively.
