60 Years of physica status solidi
Physica Status Solidi-Rapid Research Letters ( IF 2.8 ) Pub Date : 2021-01-12 , DOI: 10.1002/pssr.202000571

Dear Reader,

In July 2021 physica status solidi (pss) reaches an epic milestone: 60 years of editing, publishing, distributing, and archiving high‐quality materials physics and condensed‐matter research.

pss has witnessed six decades of tremendous scientific progress that has changed the way we live. With semiconductor physics laying the foundations for the development of computer electronics and digital communication, it had a front‐row seat watching the achievements, innovations, and emergent needs of scientific publication. Present day digital‐first publishing means that the service continues despite the pandemic that has the world in its grip, with working from home and online teaching or meetings changing the ways we work. New technology and organizational developments also deliver essential leverage for pss's traditional focus on speed. Thus, while we will duly celebrate, we will not lose a step on the path towards the future.

The anniversary year 2021 will see a series of invited articles by top authors and partners of the journals continuously added to a pss Anniversary Virtual Issue. Watch out for the 60th anniversary logo (Figure 1).

Depending on the further pandemic situation, we are also planning live or online events to highlight the anniversary and to meet with our authors and the scientific community.

Several innovations are in place to increase flexibility and convenience for authors:

Licensing—A number of transformative agreements are now in place across the world with entire countries, institutions, and funders to help authors publish open access (OnlineOpen) in the physica status solidi journals, with obvious benefits regarding visibility (articles are immediately and freely available online and download numbers increase), mandate compliance (with Creative Commons licenses), reuse (immediate deposit of final article in any website or repository), and copyright retention for authors.

Meanwhile setting an example for others, the landmark agreement between Wiley and Projekt DEAL provides Open Access publication and access to most of Wiley's content to a vast majority of German academic and research institutions. Learn more about the agreement with Projekt DEAL here and find out if your institution is a participant in this or other Open Access programs at Wiley here. Nonetheless, the pss journals are still hybrid, i.e., also publishing subscription content after Copyright Transfer Agreement, free of charge to the authors.

To facilitate the license choices technically, a new tool has been rolled out, as part of which all license signing (Copyright Transfer Agreements or Creative Commons licenses) will now be handled in the Author Services platform. Corresponding authors, especially those who are eligible for OnlineOpen, can choose the most suitable publication conditions for their articles in pss.

Article types—Towards the end of last year, we simplified the submission and manuscript transfer process for authors. All pss journals and most of their sister journals now have a single concise set of article types. The most notable change is the discontinuation of the article types “Original Paper” and “Rapid Research Letter”, which are replaced by “Research Article” and can contain original research studies of different length. Also, “Feature Article”, “Review Article”, and “Review@RRL” transition to “Review”. More information on the article types, with special consideration of boundary conditions for the fast flagship pss (RRL), can be found in the author guidelines (pss (a), pss (b), and pss (RRL)).

We believe this is a significant step towards making life easier for our authors, readers and reviewers as it greatly reduces the need for formatting in general and reformatting after transfer to a sister journal. We encourage submissions using our generic Word and LaTeX manuscript templates (valid for all physics and materials journals), but in essence allow free‐format submissions provided the prerequisite elements are included. Editors across Wiley have also teamed up to find the best destination for more manuscripts by transferring among journals in the portfolio, saving authors the effort of multiple manuscript submissions and time in editorial queues.

For the sake of speed enhancement, Accepted Articles have now been implemented. This means that a preview of the manuscript material as provided by the authors appears on Wiley Online Library immediately, only to be replaced by a typeset and proof‐corrected article in Early View within 3 weeks (or sooner at pss (RRL)).

Turning to journal content and topics, pss continues to publish quality contributions from all fields of solid‐state, materials, device, and applied physics, and has also recently expanded into the broader condensed‐matter context as well as optics.

physica status solidi (RRL) – Rapid Research Letters publishes on the preparation, structure, and simulation of advanced materials, theoretical and experimental investigations of the atomistic and electronic structure, optical, magnetic, superconducting, ferroelectric, and other properties of solids, nanostructures, and low‐dimensional systems, as well as device applications. It particularly invites papers from interdisciplinary and emerging new areas of research. As a 2020 highlight, we would like to mention the Focus Issue: Two‐Dimensional Semiconductors: Present and Future Challenges, guest edited by Maria Caporali, Alexander Grüneis, Stefan Heun, and Thomas Szkopek. Take a look at more Focus Issues here.

physica status solidi (a) – applications and materials science covers modern solid‐state physics and physical materials science with an emphasis on materials and device applications. This encompasses the preparation, analysis, and description of solid, advanced material systems, nanostructures, films, surfaces, and interfaces with respect to electronic, magnetic, optical, thermal, structural, and morphological properties, as well as device design and characteristics. Current topics include semiconductor electronics and optoelectronics, organic electronics, photovoltaics, sensors, thermoelectrics, non‐volatile memory, resistive switching, spintronics, dielectrics, ferroics, and superconductors. One 2020 highlight is the Special Issue: Ultraviolet Materials and Devices, guest‐Edited by Sergey Ivanov, Tatiana Shubina, Valentin Jmerik, and Bernard Gil. Check out the numerous other topical collections here.

physica status solidi (b) – basic solid state physics covers theoretical and experimental investigations of the structural, electronic, optical, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of solid materials based on quantum solid‐state physics. Current topics include nanotubes and graphene, 2D layered materials, strongly correlated systems, superconductivity, multiferroics, topological insulators, and semiconductors for device technology. Methods range from analytic modeling and computational approaches via growth and preparation to characterization with microscopy, diffraction, spectroscopy, magnetization, dielectric, and electrical characterization, and beyond. We are very proud of the 2020 Special Issue: Functionality of Oxide Interfaces guest‐Edited by Ingrid Mertig, Wolf Widdra, and Marius Grundmann, and more special issues and sections here.

The articles raising the most attention in the form of citations within the year of appearance 2020 are listed below.[1-6]

Looking to the future, projects in the pipeline for 2021 include Radiation and Emission in Materials in pss (a)'s first issue, and soon after, Compound Semiconductors, while pss (b) proudly presents Topological Insulators: Materials ‐ Fundamental Properties ‐ Devices in collaboration with DFG‐funded priority program 1666. In pss (RRL), look out for Hybrid Photovoltaics and Semiconductors and Emerging Fluorite‐ and Wurtzite‐Type Ferroelectrics: From (Hf,Zr)O2 to AlN and Related Materials.

Let us conclude this year's Editorial with our take on the global health crisis: We recognize that the COVID‐19 pandemic is affecting everyone's daily lives and the research community in unprecedented ways. Although some research activities are slowly resuming, many institutions remain closed, with researchers working from home under unusual circumstances. Throughout these challenging times, we aim to support our scientific community in any way possible. We are aware that authors and reviewers are doing their best to revise and review manuscripts, and that some delays may be inevitable. Do contact us without hesitation if there is something we can do to help.

Please accept the best wishes of our editorial teams for your ongoing health and wellbeing in 2021.
