Nevertheless, bringing to light the difficult aspects of the participatory design work would at least provide some guidance and encouragement to those who are stuck in a process gone wrong. Design as democracy: techniques for collective creativity makes a timely contribution to the discussion about democratic and place-based community building. The book’s message that even small-scale participatory efforts can have transformative potentials is delivered in a way that will resonate even with a general audience. The variety of stories and techniques discussed keeps the content fresh from the first to last pages. However, without some critical and theoretical reflections, there is a risk that the message of urgency the book is aiming to deliver may not resonate as widely as it could and should.
