than those from the South (which is a controversial measure of progress) and the fact that the children and grandchildren of migrants from the South are by now de facto northerners (p. 202); globalization; technological advance; the Internet; the role of the European Union; and improved infrastructure, especially high speed trains, that have made the Italian South a tourist destination for northerners. But much remains to be done, Di Maria argues: the South is still lacking in infrastructure; education lags behind; the bureaucracy dampens the entrepreneurial spirit; levels of corruption are still relatively high; and the presence of organized crime persists. In fact, Di Maria notes, ‘The transformation may not be obvious for every Italian to notice and appreciate’ (p. 214). But the key to this final chapter lies, I think, not only in the empirical facts Di Maria brings to the table as it does in affects. For Di Maria, Italy is both temporally and geographically distant; but affectively it is very close to him. The optimism with which he concludes the book owes as much to a dispassionate analysis of the facts at hand as it does to Di Maria’s desire to give the homeland he left all those years ago a second chance.
