ABSTRACT

There are numerous forms of densification taking place in Johannesburg and the surrounding area; the vast majority is through the auto-construction of residents. Backyard rooms and units, the repurposing and reconfiguring of older multi-storey buildings, and the pirating of spaces such as basements and rooftops have been key sites of resident-led densification. The state, however, has not been able to constructively support these modes and instead has plumped for parallel plans and policies. The danger of this approach is the continued discourse of associating informal densification with criminality, disease and chaos.
