Two-step solvothermal synthesis of high capacity LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode for Li-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are attracting increasing interest for a new type of green energy battery. Among many electrode materials, layered ternary LiNi1-x-yCoxMyO2 (M = Mn or Al) is considered a promising commercial prospect because of its low cost, excellent electrical conductivity, high discharge specific capacity, and environmentally friendly. In this paper, a ternary cathode material LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 with high specific capacity was prepared by a two-step solvothermal method. The effects of solvothermal time and temperature on the morphology and electrochemical properties for the electrode materials were studied. It was found that the electrochemical performance of the LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode material synthesized at 180°C for 12 hr was better.
