Spatio-temporal variation in desert vulnerability using desertification index over the Banas River Basin in Rajasthan, India

Desertification is a major environmental problem at global and regional levels with drastic impacts on agriculture, water resource, and the economy. In this study, an attempt has been made to develop a methodology for the spatial and temporal assessment of the desertification vulnerability over the Banas River Basin, Rajasthan, using the desertification vulnerability index (DVI). DVI was estimated using three indices, which are expressed using nine indicators. DVI is a composite index comprising of the climate quality index, soil quality index, and socio-economic index. Results illustrate that the climate quality index has deteriorated in 2001–2013 as compared to 1983–2000. High values of climate quality index make the lower area of the Banas River Basin less vulnerable to desertification as per the climate quality index. The temporal analysis shows that the vulnerability of desertification has increased in 2001–2013. Positive change (decrease in desertification) is noticed in 30.36% of the area, whereas 69.64% of the area has shown an increase in desertification. The results of the study point to the need for focused interventions in water management and in reducing social vulnerability. The methodology and finding of this research can be used by policymakers and hydrologists for making a better strategy to reduce desert vulnerability over similar river basins.
