In its current incarnation, Early Modern Letters Online (EMLO) is a web-based Union Catalogue of early modern correspondence. It aggregates text and metadata from ongoing and published research as well as newly digitized archival resources into a rich database accessible to the public through a centralized interface. Supported by theMellon Foundation, Oxford University, and the Bodleian Libraries, EMLO is aimed primarily at a scholarly audience, yet it includes search tips, contextual summaries about early modern individuals and institutions, and a variety of linked resources that help to broaden its appeal and use. In terms of the schema proposed by Anna-Luna Post and Andreas Weber in the December 2018 issue of Isis, EMLO is positioned somewhere between a “Resource,” offering resources to historians on the web, and a “Digital Knowledge Commons,” in which users are able to contribute to the contents and EMLO’s further development.
