A numerical study on cross ply laminates subjected to stray fragments impact loading

The present study reports the response of composite laminates under high velocity impact by fragments. A numerical model is developed to simulate a hostile scenario of impact of fragments after their interaction with a blast wave to study the response of cross ply laminates. The composite laminates are modelled using a progressive damage model having a string of failure criteria and damage variables. The damage model is based on a combined elastic–plastic response which was found to have good agreement with existing experimental and numerical results. The CONWEP blast wave model is used to interact with a stacked set of fragments which then goes on to collide with the laminate. The 12-ply laminate is kept at various standoff distances as well as angles for different cases to study the collective and individual effect of fragment impact. The performance of laminates is discussed based on different combinations of standoff distances and angles for deformable AA7075 and rigid Steel projectiles.
