Increasingly, funders of education and rehabilitation programs are demanding that those programs incorporate evidence-based practices into their work with students and clients. It seems reasonable to insist that the interventions that are used by practitioners are based on scientific studies that have demonstrated their effectiveness. Too often, however, in the field of services for individuals with visual impairments, we have relied on practices that are based on tradition and professional beliefs of what might work. It is not that the field has an aversion to using scientific evidence but rather that this situation is related to the limited number of intervention studies from which such an evidence base is founded.
