RZWQM Simulation of Soil Moisture and Maize Yield in Newly Cultivated Land with Different Soil Bulk Density

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to determine the optimal soil bulk density in newly added cultivated land for maintaining soil moisture and crops growing. In this work, a field experiment was conducted to study the effect of 5 different soil’s bulk density (BD) on soil moisture and crop yield in newly created land on gravel: T23 (BD = 1.3 g/cm3), T24 (BD = 1.4 g/cm3), T25 (BD = 1.5 g/cm3), T26 (BD = 1.6 g/cm3), T27 (BD = 1.7 g/cm3). The root zone water quality model (RZWQM) was calibrated and verified with experimental data, and then applied to simulate the soil moisture and crop yield under different bulk density from 2004 to 2016. Simulation prediction shows that the average yield of the soil bulk density of T25 treatment is highest with 7551 kg/ha, and the CV of multi-year crop yield is the minimum with 31.9%, meaning that the yield of crops of this bulk density is the most stable. The relationship between soil water storage and growth period yield is approximately linear, with R2 of 0.46. Comprehensive analysis indicates that the soil bulk density of that 0–40 cm – soil bulk density = 1.2 g/cm3; 40–50 cm soil bulk density = 1.5 g/cm3 is more conducive to water conservation and crop growth.
