Design and control challenges of hybrid, dual nozzle gas turbine power generating plant: A critical review

The provision of sustainable energy is one of the critical challenges currently facing the power sector and gas turbine power production has established itself as one of the more viable sources of reliable energy. However, the cost of electricity produced from the contemporary gas turbine power plants using diesel fuel technology remains considerably high, irrespective of enormous progress, and related improvement in combustion technology. Given this backdrop, this paper reviews the available gas turbine power generating technology applications. Meanwhile, the continued reliance on gas turbine using only diesel fuel technology does not only remain financially unsustainable but also technologically outdated. Hence, this study draws its findings that over-reliance on the diesel generating set is largely due to the lack of fuel flexibility dual nozzle power plant-widely available technology for consumers. Furthermore, control operational challenges have not made it user-friendly. In response to the search for a more cost-effective and reliable power source in combating the challenges associated with lack of improved technology, a Hybrid, Dual Nozzle Gas Turbine (HDNGT) Power Generating Plant with fuel flexibility operations is being suggested. This paper is a critical review discussing its design and control challenges and recommends the most effective optimization and control approaches using advanced control technology and techniques. To this end, the study draws on already existing works done by numerous researchers in the field and tactically reviews the current works to envisage the limitation in the current approach to suggest the way forward. The results clearly show that the available technology is limited to the design of high-power plant and not made available for the medium level plant manufactures due to high implementation costs. The technique used for the review centred on technology, application, availability and environmental impact analysis, controllability and implementation challenges.
