In Chapter 4, the author considers the principles of safeguarding and discusses the importance of evidencing ‘defensible decision-making’. Chapter 5 contains a range of therapeutic approaches including the ‘cycle of change’, ‘wheel of change’, both with comprehensive explanations, and the seven-step model of solutionfocussed therapy – all strategies for engaging with the person self-neglecting using a person-centred approach. Chapter 6, which I found most useful, discusses ‘Assessment and Engagement’ with a ‘Clutter Rating Scale’ and an excellent ‘SelfNeglect Practitioners Self-Assessment’, while Chapter 7 considers how to support practitioners. Although I agree with Deborah Barnett that Senior Managers becoming involved and chairing conferences supports practitioners, in my opinion, more could have been said in acknowledgement of the pressures on workers relating to increasing caseloads, the impact of austerity, how challenging the work is with people who self-neglect and hoard and the need to balance good social work practice with corporate expectations. In conclusion, I liked the way the author clarified and emphasised the link between self-neglect and safeguarding, and I found the checklists useful in focusing the intervention and ensuring as many aspects as possible are considered. I found the relaxed style of writing easy to read and will certainly be encouraging professionals I work with to utilise the ‘Final Checklist’ to ensure that as many options as possible have been considered. I have no hesitation in recommending this text to workers already undertaking interventions with people who self-neglect and hoard and to workers with no previous experience of working with this service user group.
