ABSTRACT The interest in applying psychoanalytic understanding to the upbringing and educating of children has been ongoing for a century now. The urge to share knowledge about children’s inner worlds with the aim of making home and school life more supportive and responsive to their emotional well-being was one that Anna Freud (1965) described as “an almost irresistible temptation.” The first paper in this collection tells the story of the first “psychoanalytic school” started in 1927 in Vienna by Anna Freud herself, along with Dorothy Burlingham and Eva Rosenfeld. The papers that follow describe the origins and evolution of four other such schools, founded in the following decades, by child analysts who could not resist the temptation. The stories of the founding member schools of the Alliance for Psychoanalytic Schools (APS) are told by those with firsthand, intimate knowledge of what it takes to create and sustain such an endeavor. The section ends with an account of a school consultation in an APS member school.
