ABSTRACT The Lucy Daniels Center evolved from a psychoanalytic preschool with an Early Intervention Program that included therapeutic classrooms, along with Child Enrichment Classrooms for typically developing children. From the outset there was a wish to provide psychoanalytic understanding to as wide a community as possible. After two decades, the child enrichment classes were ended and the therapeutic classes were expanded through the fifth grade. During this same time period, the Center grew and evolved to become a psychoanalytic mental health facility that provides a full spectrum of clinical services, home-based treatments, and community outreach, in addition to ongoing school-based treatment. A commitment to a core psychoanalytic and psychodynamic orientation, with a willingness to integrate adjunctive therapies, contributes to the community’s perception that the Center provides optimal, contemporary care for children from birth to age eleven.
