Degradation of aqueous alachlor in pulsed corona discharge

Gas-phase pulsed corona discharge (PCD) gained attention due to its energy-efficient oxidation of waterborne organic pollutants and simplicity in use and maintenance. Experimental study in PCD oxidation of aqueous herbicide alachlor was undertaken for its energy efficiency and degradation products. Plasma oxidation efficiency exceeds the one of ozonation by at least two times. Electric conductivity up to 10 mS cm−1 demonstrated negligible impact. Bicarbonates reduced the oxidation efficiency scavenging hydroxyl radicals. Identification of degradation intermediates proposed the rationale of predominant OH-radical reactions including dehalogenation, electrophilic attack of aromatic ring, ether bond cleavage, and cyclisation.
