March 2021 marks the 75th anniversary of the Society for the Study of Evolution (SSE), a society that remains vibrant, with an expanding international membership. Much has changed since 1946, both in terms of how the SSE operates (see Smocovitis 1994 for the early history of the SSE) and in terms of the foci of research undertaken by its members and published in its journals. In recognition of the importance of documenting some of these changes, a series of papers will be published in Volume 75. Some will focus on scientific advances, whereas others, like this one, will focus on the Society itself. The activities of the SSE have expanded greatly during the past 20 years or so, prompting me to focus primarily on this relatively recent time period in its history. It is also a period in which I have personal experience. This account will be from the perspective of a long-time member of SSE who has served the Society, rather than that of a historian. I have gleaned information about the SSE from several sources: my own memory, 70 years of printed issues of Evolution, printed programs from the annual meetings (many of which are available online: www.evolutionmeetings.org/past-future-meetings), supplements to volumes of Evolution with membership lists and other information, the SSE website, and the minutes of meetings of the Council since 1999. Here, I will categorize some of the SSE’s activities under a set of subheadings instead of marching through the years one by one—while some years were relatively eventful, during others the SSE functioned without consequential longterm changes. I hope to highlight how the leaders of the SSE—the elected Council and committee members—have put in place several successful initiatives that have energized and diversified the membership, supported early-career researchers, and strengthened the role of the SSE in public understanding of evolution. These take the form of various committees, awards, and investment of society funds in travel to the meetings, research, education, and outreach. Ours is not a stagnant society, but one that strives to innovate to enhance the field of evolutionary biology and foster developing scientists.
