The next two texts are from Joséphine Picard† who was born in 1918. She was a renowned healer and midwife. In 1980, Drapeau appointed Joséphine Bacon (identified as JB in the text), also from Pessamit, to make a six-hour recording in which Mrs. Picard recounts her life story. The two episodes presented here (“Adopted Animals” and “The Little Caribou”) are part of this recording. A first draft transcription of the recording was done, in nonstandard orthography, by Joséphine Bacon, in the years that followed. That draft was revised when the original recording was segmented in Transcriber. A first translation to French was done by Adélina Bacon in 2014 and the authors produced the free English translation. The Transcriber transcripts in standard orthography were checked by Hélène St-Onge and, more recently, the final text was corrected with Yvette Mollen. This text is interesting linguistically because it is not a story in the sense that “Aiasheu,” “Sheshiliss,” and “Tshernish’s Grandmother” are stories. In this text, the narrator addresses an issue, the attempt to domesticate different bush animals, and she discusses it by reporting several events around this topic, drawing mostly on the experience of others. She thus reports several events from hearsay using the indirect mode to indicate that she was not a direct witness. Moreover, the text comprises several instances of general “timeless” assertions as opposed to specific, historically instantiated events.
