As many of my students know, I began 2020 in Canberra, Australia. My students know this because as part of my teaching materials over the last year I have included a photo of a sign from the Museum of Australia explaining why its outdoor garden was not open when I visited there with my family on New Year’s Day—‘Due to air quality, the Garden of Australian Dreams is closed.’ The 2019/2020 Australian fire season was extraordinary. A total of 3,094 houses were lost and over 17 million hectares burnt.1 Air quality in many places, and especially Canberra, was appalling.2 You really did not want to be outside.
