ABSTRACT

This is a book review of Adult Minority Language Learning: Motivation, Identity and Target Variety by Colin J. Flynn, published in 2020 by Multilingual Matters. This monograph centers on the topic of second language acquisition across eight chapters, providing a succinct account of the affective (attitude, motivation, and identity) that shape the learning of Irish. As a minority language, understanding how such theoretical aspects apply to Irish sets a precedence for the need to expand the field’s knowledge on communities that remain largely understudied. This book review highlights each chapter’s key points and findings with the intent to provide a pithy summary of Flynn’s contributions of the field of SLA.
