Abstract

Given a collection $\mathcal{A}=\{L_1,\dots ,L_n\}$ of intermediate fields in a field extension L/K of finite degree and ${\Lambda }_{L,\mathcal{A}}=L_1\times \cdots \times L_n,$ there is a natural map ${\Psi }_{L,\mathcal{A}}:L\to {\Lambda }_{L,\mathcal{A}}$ given by $y\mapsto ({\text{Tr}}_{L/L_1}(y),\dots ,{\text{Tr}}_{L/L_n}(y)),$ where ${\text{Tr}}_{L/L_i}:L\to L_i$ denotes the trace. The image set ${\Psi }_{L,\mathcal{A}}(L)$ turns out to be contained in a certain subset ${\Lambda }_{L,\mathcal{A}}^{*}$ of ${\Lambda }_{L,\mathcal{A}}$ (in fact, a K-subspace). In this paper, we exhibit classes of extensions L/K where the equality ${\Psi }_{L,\mathcal{A}}(L)={\Lambda }_{L,\mathcal{A}}^{*}$ holds for every collection $\mathcal{A}$ of intermediate fields in L/K, and we also give examples to the contrary. Finally we provide combinatorial formulas for the dimension of ${\Lambda }_{L,\mathcal{A}}^{*}.$
