“Beating the Virus” is a short story, mainly illustrated in pictures with some additional text. It explains the story of a woman, Kali, who has Coronavirus, what her symptoms are like and what to do to keep safe. She is lucky that she has a friend, Stefan, to come round to her house and help her out with shopping. It describes how she eventually feels better and can manage to go out for a walk. The text leads the reader to additional resources around how to find help and support if you are feeling unwell.

RC—We saw this book as we were setting up the “Keeping People Connected” phone and video link for people with learning difficulties and/or autism in Cumbria, Lancashire and across the North East. It was good to be able to send it to people with a view to help them understand what was happening. Coronavirus was proving frightening and it was difficult for people to get hold of and understand clear information. However, it is probably very important for some people that there is someone to support them going through the book. It helps that the book is available free of cost.

LT—I really did like this book. It was very informative and presented in such a way that the language was easy to understand. I found some of the pictures a bit difficult to look at. But the way it went through everything step‐by‐step was helpful.

Often, if you have leaflets, you cannot always understand them, so it is good there are other formats like websites and books. With my visual impairment, I would also like the book to be on audio.

The information is not only useful to people with learning difficulties and/or autism but I think it’s useful for everyone. Everyone in the entire world has had problems understanding some of the information about Coronavirus and COVID‐19 regardless of whether you have a disability or not.

RC—The words at the back of the book make helpful suggestions of how to use it as a resource with people. Beyond Words does recognise that some people will have difficulty with the pictures, but this a good example of addressing issues, as far as possible, about access to important information. The other books cited such as, “Am I going to Die,” are equally important. We know people with learning difficulties have been living with fear. The importance of ensuring people have information that is relevant to them cannot be overstated. Well done, “Beyond Words.”
