ABSTRACT

Transformations and restorations of existing buildings may have to solve major issues regarding the buildings’ structural safety. Timber floors for instance may be damaged due to decay, a faulty design or a poor implementation during construction. Moreover, most of the times old or historical buildings have been designed for a maximum load much lower than the one prescribed nowadays by current standards. Hence, the floors must often be strengthened to increase their load-bearing capacity and/or stiffness. This paper investigates a strengthening technique consisting of new CLT panels screwed over the existing floors, through the use of timber blocks, maintaining an additional gap between the new CLT panel and the existing joists. The interest of the technique is evaluated by assessing experimentally the potential gains regarding load carrying capacity and stiffness, through tests on reconstituted floor elements, on one hand, and on connections, on the other hand.
