Style, Computers, and Early Modern Drama: Beyond Authorship

‘The three frameworks supporting Emergentism’. These frameworks are ‘the theories of natural selection, complexity, and timeframes’ (p. 680). Generally speaking, the topics discussed in this book point to three basic assumptions about language shared by cognitive linguists. First, that our linguistic faculty is not autonomous and our linguistic competences are inseparable from our general cognitive abilities; this motivates the attempt to situate language use within general cognitive operations. Second, that grammar is usage-based; this drives studies on e.g. constructions, language acquisition and grammaticalization. Third, that linguistic units at different levels are in essence the same as form-meaning pairings; this encourages the analysis of phonological, semantic and syntactic structures in terms of general rules and cognitive operations. However, some important topics such as linguistic relativity are not covered in detail as central topics in the book, although they may come up in some chapters. The most prominent feature of this Handbook is its emphasis on using empirical methods, in contrast with The Oxford Handbook of Cognitive Linguistics (Geeraerts & Cuyckens 2007). Traditional studies in CL are mainly based on introspection, but the past 20 years have witnessed a surge in empirical studies with evidence from corpora, psycholinguistic and neuroimaging experiments. Another feature of this book is its emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. Since cognitive linguists claim that our linguistic abilities are inseparable from general cognitive abilities, the study of language should be integrated with studies of cognition, society, culture, etc.
