ABSTRACT

This article summarizes new developments in military noncognitive enlistment testing that are described in more detail in the remainder of this special issue. It notes that for most of its history, enlistment testing has focused on cognitive ability, but that recently, research in personality and interest measurement has come to the fore. This research and its applications in military decision-making are described in three parts in this issue. The first part addresses personality testing for initial enlistment decisions. The second addresses using personality testing for in-service decisions. The third addresses vocational interest testing. Earlier research in noncognitive testing was discussed in a special issue in Military Psychology, but since then research and operational applications in this area have expanded further, leading to the description of this phenomenon as a scientific revolution.
