Rhizoclonium riparium is a cryptogenic macroalga that freely inhabits fresh, sea and brackish waters and is able to compete in a variety of habitats. In the summers of 2018 and 2019, this alga was found to form huge filamentous mats, covering all rocks, down to a depth of 3 m in a harbour in Reyðarfjörður, east Iceland. The species taxonomy was confirmed by molecular data. Here, we report the invasive behaviour of this species in Reyðarfjörður, which may represent a pool source for R. riparium dispersal, as hull fouling is the most likely vector for the spread of this species.
