An Improved Electrochemical Method for Moisture Determination in Mineral Oil

The paper presents an option to improve the method for water determination using a transformer oil moisture meter, which is widely used in power grid laboratories to monitor water in oil. It is found that the older the oil, the less convergence, and reproducibility of the water analysis results in oil obtained by two methods - coulometric titration with Karl Fischer reagent and electrochemical method with electrolysis of water on a sensitive element. It is shown how the sorption of the amount of water from the oil matrix is improved by transformer oil sample heating to 80 °C, which positively affects the metrological characteristics of the electrochemical method for determining water in liquid dielectrics.
