Chemical Composition, Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Anti proliferative Activities of Essential Oil and Extract of the Fruits of Etlinger sayapensis

Abstract

Etlingera sayapensis belongs to Zingiberaceae family. This research tried to evaluate the chemical composition and bioactivity of E. sayapensis fruits essential oil (ESFO) and its methanolic extract (ES-FM). The essential oil was obtained using a Clevenger-type apparatus. ESFO composition was identified by chromatographic-based methods (GC/FID and GC/MS). The evaluation of the bioactivity of ESFO and EFSM including antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity was carried out using various assays. Linalool formate (41.2 %), α-terpineol (17.9 %), δ-elemene (14.4 %) and octyl formate (12.8 %) were the most abundant compounds in ESFO. The plant extract exhibited potent antioxidant activity, as well. ESFM scavenged DPPH with an IC50 of 6.11±0.42 μg/mL, bleached β-carotene with 95.61±0.92 percentage, a chelated ferrous ion with IC50 of 139.75±6.3 μg/mL and reduced ferric ion with 67.72±0.93 mg TrE/g. the total phenolic content of ESFM was 57.13±0.72 mg GAE/g. Although ESFO showed a weaker activity compared to EFSM. On the other hand, ESFO revealed antimicrobial activity as well as ESFM in disc diffusion and minimum inhibition concentration assays. They prevented the growth of 13 and 10 out of 18 selected microorganisms respectively. In MTT assay, ESFM exerted cytotoxic effects on human prostate (IC50= 26.52±2.15 μg/mL), colon (IC50= 49.60±1.60 μg/mL) and breast (IC50 = 69.82±1.98 μg/mL) cancer cells, EFSO also displayed effects on the cancer cells but less than those of EFSM. In conclusion, our study has illustrated that the fruits of E. sayapensis can be considered as a rich source of secondary metabolites with real benefits.
