30th Anniversary Review Dear Readers, It is exciting for me to be writing about this 30th anniversary collection, and the 30 years of game-changing research that this issue celebrates. When Bioconjugate Chemistry began publication in 1990, I was still a postdoc with an (almost) full head of hair, doing small molecule supramolecular chemistry. My first experience with BC was in the early 2000s when we started moving into nanomaterials for biological applications. We chose BC because it was the journal poised at the interface between man-made and biology, with a reputation for rigor and impact. What I really appreciated was the breadth of what was considered man-made for the journal. BC was (and is!) a place where nanoparticles and polymers are conjugated with proteins, nucleic acids, and other biosystems to generate new and exciting scientific advances. Over the years, BC has not just evolved; it has been an active driver in advancing the synergy of chemistry, materials, and biology. You can see the breadth of the journal in this collection. Bob Langer leads off with progress in bringing bioconjugates to the clinic—certainly a timely topic! Delivery is an important focus at BC, with reviews by Shana Kelly (mitochondrial targeting), and Valentina Francia, Pieter Cullis, and Dominik Witzigmann (using biomolecular coronas for gene therapy). One of the hottest areas in therapeutics is the use of external stimuli to activate drugs. BC’s own Gang Zheng discusses activation of drugs with sound, and Xing-Jie Liang shows metal-based catalysts can be used for both external and endogenous therapeutic strategies. Imaging is another area of strength at BC. Peng Huang provides an insightful review of croconaine dyes, Changfeng Wu discusses fluorescent bioconjugates for super-resolution imaging, and Zongqiang Cui reviews the fluorescent tagging of proteins in live cells. Strategies for creating bioconjugates provide the foundation for many scientific breakthroughs. These bioconjugates can be covalent, as Hans-Achim Wagenknecht describes for post-synthetic modification of nucleic acids. Andrew Goodwin also presents a very forward-looking review of non-genetic modification of cell membranes and membrane proteins. Non-covalent bioconjugation strategies have unique capabilities, as shown by Kazunari Akiyoshi with his discussion of artificial chaperones for biomolecules, and as Angela Casini presents for metal–peptide complexes. Finally, the interface between materials and bioconjugates is an emerging and important focus area for BC, as exemplified by Luc Brunsveld’s discussion of protein scaffolds and Jennifer West’s account of the use of hydrogels as ECM mimics. The breadth and impact of these 30th anniversary reviews demonstrate how the BC of today continues the forward-looking embrace of new science and systems while maintaining the old-fashioned virtues of scientific rigor and reproducibility.
