Composite Polypropylene Fibers Modified with High Density Polyethylene and Graphene

Abstract

In view of the poor tensile strength of polypropylene (PP) fibers, PP composite fibers reinforced with high density polyethylene (HDPE) and modified graphene were prepared by a melt extrusion method. The effects of graphene and HDPE on the PP fibers were studied by tensile strength measurement, infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that when 25 phr (parts per hundred resins) of HDPE were added, the tensile strength of the modified PP fibers reached 2.46 × 102 MPa, an increase by 9.3%, and with the addition of 0.3 phr graphene and 25 phr HDPE, the mechanical and thermal properties of graphene/HDPE/PP composite fiber, the 25 phr HDPE with 0.3 phr graphene evenly dispersed in the PP, were the best; the tensile strength increased by 11.1% and the thermal decomposition temperature increased by 197 °C compared to the pure PP fiber; the PP and HDPE were compatible.
