In 1976, the American Fisheries Society (AFS) launched the inaugural issue of Fisheries magazine. Nestled on the lower half of page 27 lay a photo of a bikini‐clad woman on the beach with the caption “This photo doesn’t have any direct relevance to FISHERIES, but your Editor came across it in the Society’s Hawaii meeting photo file and thought the membership might like to share the view.” In the second issue, the editor Carl R. Sullivan (for whom the Fishery Conservation Award is named) discussed the “overwhelmingly favorable” reactions to the photo, referred to it as “Our Center Fold,” and included one comment from a reader requesting additional photos in which the “young lady’s features be described in centimeters.”
