Welcome to the “65^th Birthday of Prof Emmanuel Iwuoha: Electrochemistry in Africa” special issue in ELECTROANALYSIS

This special issue, which comprises 55 articles, is a mix of reviews, short communications and full manuscripts across a wide spectrum of electrochemistry. It provides an insight into some of the electrochemical research activities that are conducted in Africa by African electrochemists and their international colleagues from Europe, USA and Asia. Readers will find cutting edge reports on sensors, biosensors, materials, battery, supercapacitors, catalysis, water, energy, water, etc. While most special issues have a narrower focus, we could not resist contributions from wider scope owing to the following reasons: i) The celebrant's contributions across the field of electrochemistry at different phases of his career of over 30 years; ii) The international footprint of Prof Iwuoha across different laboratories in around the world; iii) The expansive list of former and active collaborators around the world who hold the celebrant in high esteem; iv) The incredible number of students who have been supervised or mentored by the celebrant especially as postdoc and doctoral levels. Most of these researchers have evolved into experts in their own right; v) The number of young academics who have been mentored and supported by Prof Iwuoha over the years; and vi) Contributions from admirers of Prof Iwuoha across the world. Most of these admirers cannot but praise the work Prof Iwuoha who has made such a huge global impact from Africa as base!

As Guest editors, we are joyfully overwhelmed with the responses from the six groups of people listed in the afore paragraph. It may interest you to know the relationship between Prof Iwuoha and the Guest Editors of this special issue. Prof Iwuoha is a mentor and long‐time collaborator of Prof Kenneth Ozoemena. Ken heard the word “electrochemistry” first time from Prof Iwuoha who was his undergraduate Physical Chemistry Lecturer at the Abia State University (ABSU) in 1989. His former students of Industrial Chemistry at ABSU still remember his math‐filled Physical Chemistry / Equilibrium Electrochemistry lectures with ‘great pleasure' (laughs). Prof Omotayo Arotiba was doctoral student and a postdoctoral fellow under the supervision and mentorship of Prof Iwuoha at SensorLab, University of the Western Cape from 2006 to 2009.

Prof Emmanuel Iwuoha is an African electrochemist of a global status. We see it as a privilege to represent many and join others in celebrating him through this academic platform. We cannot but thank the editors of Electroanalysis for agreeing to dedicate this issue to one of the finest electrochemists on the African soil.
