Evaluation of favela seed oil extraction with alternative solvents and pressurized-liquid ethanol

In this study, oil was extracted from favela (Cnidoscolus quercifolius) seeds via the Soxhlet method using ethanol, isopropanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane as solvents. Ethanol provided the highest oil yield (49.6 wt%), β-sitosterol concentration (131.6 mg 100 goil−1), TPC (197.4 mg GAE kgoil−1), and antioxidant activity (6.0 mmol Trolox kgoil−1). Therefore, ethanol was used for the non-conventional pressurized-liquid extraction (PLE) method. The effects of the mass flow rate (2, 3, and 4 g min−1) and temperature (40, 60, and 80 ºC) on the PLE with ethanol at 10 MPa were evaluated. A yield of up to 45.8 wt% was obtained when the amount of consumed ethanol was 58 g (~19 min of dynamic extraction). The Soxhlet- and PLE-obtained oils presented similar fatty acid profiles and contents of acylglycerols. No significant differences were observed in the total tocopherol and β-sitosterol concentrations of the oils extracted via PLE at different temperatures.
