ABSTRACT Knowledge of the ecological traits of insects has a fundamental importance for their conservation and, at the same time, for a better interpretation of the effects of climate change. Orthoptera appear to be good indicators of global warming. The goal of this study was to take a census of the species overwintering at the adult stage in a xerothermic oasis in an Alpine Valley. With this purpose, in the month of February, the available, observable species were monitored for two consecutive years, focused on repeatedly monitoring the same plots. Overall, the study recorded four species, two of which (Pezotettix giornae and Chorthippus brunneus brunneus) had never before been reported overwintering as adults in the Italian Alps before. Considering the potential effect of warmer winters that are forecast for the next few decades, the ability of some species to survive in winter as adults may increase in the study area, and may even become possible in others areas of occurrence where climatic conditions currently do not allow it.
