Electrical and dielectric behaviors of thermally treated phosphate minerals

Abstract Two modified phosphate minerals were heat-treated and characterized. A single apatite phase is detected after 1000°C heat treatment, although the natural phosphates were initially composed of sodium and carbonate co-substituted fluorapatites with some impurities. Temperature and frequency dependent electric properties are studied in the 10 Hz to 35 MHz frequency domain at different temperatures using complex impedance analysis. Influence of the composition, temperature, and frequency on the conduction properties of the selected phosphate ceramics is discussed. The best conduction is obtained with a modified material coming from the Khouribga deposit. The conduction mechanism, which depends on the nature of the mobile ion and the vacancy sites, has a one-dimensional character for fluoride and a tri-dimensional one for sodium in the apatite structure, which offers the possibility to modulate a mixed ionic conductivity.
