Zhang, Prabakar and colleagues report the use of synchrotron small‐angle X‐ray scattering and surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to study the structural changes in collagen upon treatment with chromium sulphate, chromium chloride and sodium sulphate. Covalent and electrostatic binding are revealed to coexist. Additionally, an increase in the kosmotropicity of the anion from Cl to SO4 2− promotes the covalent binding of Cr(III) in collagen, leading the authors to propose an anionregulated binding mechanism. This is the first report of using SERS to analyze binding mechanisms in collagen and could provide a new route to study chemical modifications in collagen‐based biomaterials. (DOI:10.1002 / bip.23406)
