Hydrogen Peroxide Decomposition Catalyzed by Iron Hydroxide Supported on Cellulose

Abstract

Colloidal particles of iron hydroxide produced by the hydrolysis of an iron(III) chloride solution in hot water catalyze the consumption of hydrogen peroxide and initiate the oxidative decomposition of impurities present in technical cellulose. This causes the bleaching of cellulose, and its degree depends on the concentrations of reagents and conditions of the process. The main products of the parallel oxidative destruction of cellulose itself are formic and other carboxylic acids. The regularities and features of the processes are analyzed; the kinetic parameters of the peroxide decomposition and acid formation are determined.
