TISSUE LEVELS OF ORGANOCHLORINE PESTICIDES IN BENIGN AND MALIGNANT BREAST DISEASE: A COMPARATIVE EXPLORATORY STUDY

Exposure of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) may be a potential risk factor for breast cancer. Their role may become more important in a developing country like India where they are used in abundance for agricultural purpose. The present study was planned to compare the tissue levels of OCPs in patients with breast cancer and fibroadenoma. The tissue levels of OCPs were compared in two groups of patients - group A had patients who had undergone surgery for breast cancer while group B patients had surgery for excision of breast fibroadenoma. Quantification of OCP levels was done by Perkin Elmer Gas Chromatograph (GC) equipped with 63Ni selective Electron Capture Detector. There were significantly higher breast tissue levels of OCPs in the study population indicating significant exposure. Eighteen different types of organochlorine pesticides were detected in different subjects in the study population. Six of the organochlorine pesticides (γ HCH, δ HCH, Endrin, Endosulfan-II, p,p’-DDD and p,p’-DDT) were detected in all the subjects. Tissue levels of endosulfan-II, p,p’ DDT and p,p’ DDD were significantly higher in patients with breast cancer compared to patients with fibroadenoma. Higher tissue levels of OCPs (α HCH) were significantly associated with the presence of extra-capsular spread (1.42 vs. 0.91, p-value 0.04), higher disease stage (early breast cancer vs. locally advanced breast cancer; 18.90 vs. 11.90, p-value 0.04). The present pilot study indicates higher tissue levels of OCPs in patients residing in North India and suffering from BC compared to patients with fibroadenoma.
