A new screw connection model and FEA of CFS shear wall panels

Abstract This paper presents the details and application of a newly developed variably oriented spring pair element (VOSPE) model and the Bouc-wen-Baber-Noori (BWBN) constitutive model, to represent the behaviour of the screw connections between the CFS framing and the sheathing in the non-linear finite element analysis of the cold formed steel shear wall panels (CFSSWP) under the monotonic and cyclic loadings. The parameters of the BWBN model were obtained from the experimental load-displacement behaviour of the screw connection data, with the screw experiencing shear parallel to the free edge of the sheathing. The proposed VOSPE screw model was implemented in ABAQUS to analyse the behaviour of cold formed steel wall panels. The finite element analysis results compare well with the experimental results of the overall wall panels under both the monotonic and cyclic loadings, wherein the behaviour and the strength were essentially dictated by the non-linear behaviour and strength of the screw connections. Finally, a non-linear dynamic analysis of a wall panel under an earthquake loading is illustrated, using the proposed model of the wall panel.
