December 2020 The author of 5G New Radio: Beyond Mobile Broadband, Dr. Amitav Mukherjee, is a principal standards consultant and lead Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) delegate for Charter Communications. His primary areas of interest include 5G New Radio (NR) in unlicensed spectrum, 3GPP Release 16, and beyond. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Irvine in 2012. During the course of his career, he has held many research and development positions at several communication companies. He is a Senior Member of IEEE. This book covers both the radio access and core network technologies at the heart of 5G networks. It also provides readers with a unique perspective, by addressing the diverse use case families that 5G networks aim to address (in addition to mobile broadband services, such as critical communications with high reliability and low latency requirements) and by discussing enhancements in 5G networks that impact network infrastructure. Various types of spectrum, including licensed and unlicensed, millimeter-wave, and lower frequencies, are covered. Chapter 1, “The Road to 5G NR,” gives an overview of 5G, a timeline of the technology’s development, and a road map for the future of 5G NR. 5G radio can be defined as an ultraflexible radio access technology that, in conjunction with the 5G core, addresses a wide array of use cases and service requirements beyond mobile broadband. Chapter 2, “NR Radio Access Network,” summarizes the protocol stack functions of the principal radio access network (RAN) entities, user equipment, and generalized node B. The downlink data transfer requirements of all these network layers are also considered. In Chapter 3, “Network Architecture,” the author focuses on the basic architectural elements of the 5G core and how it differs from the LTE evolved packet core (EPC). The chapter reviews the various architecture options for the deployment of enhanced LTE and NR RANs and the various migration paths available to the network operator.
