The Immunology & Cell Biology Publication of the Year Awards have been established for outstanding studies submitted by first authors who are financial members of the Australian & New Zealand Society for Immunology Inc. in the year of the article’s publication. Articles vying for these awards can come from any of the journal categories including Original Articles, Outstanding Observations, Perspectives or Short Communications. The ASI President, together with members of the ASI Executive and the Immunology & Cell Biology Editorial Board, undertakes rigorous review to identify the most outstanding original research articles based on scientific excellence. The winner of the Chris and Bhama Parish ICB Publication of the Year Award is awarded an AU$1000 scholarship provided by Wiley and the runner‐up is awarded an AU$500 scholarship provided by Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Every year an outstanding series of papers is submitted for consideration for the prizes and 2019 was no different with an exceptional standard of science reported in the papers. It is a great pleasure to announce the winners of the awards for 2019 as follows:
  • Chris and Bhama Parish ICB Publication of the Year Award: Katharine J Goodall
  • Department of Immunology and Pathology, Central Clinical School, Monash University, Melbourne
  • Thermo Fisher Scientific Publication Award: Shannon C David
  • Research Centre for Infectious Diseases, and Department of Molecular and Biomedical Science, School of Biological Sciences, University of Adelaide, Adelaide

The winning paper by Katharine Goodall et al. is an Original Article entitled ”Multiple receptors converge on H2‐Q10 to regulate NK and γδT‐cell development” and was published in March 2019.1 In this study, Dr Goodall et al. have focused their attention on a long overlooked class 1b major histocompatibility complex molecule, H2‐Q10, originally identified in 1982. Using mice deficient in H2‐Q10, Dr Goodall discovered that this molecule serves at least two distinct purposes in the development of innate lymphocytes and innate‐like T cells. First, it contributes to the development of conventional hepatic natural killer (NK) cells by stabilizing the expression of Qa‐1b and serving as a ligand for Ly49C. Second, H2‐Q10 interacts with liver‐resident γδT cells via CD8αα, and this interaction is essential for the development of liver‐resident but not intestinal CD8αα γδT cells. This work highlights how H2‐Q10 coordinates the complex interactions that regulate and shape the development of liver‐resident lymphocyte subsets.

The Original Article by David et al., “Enhanced safety and immunogenicity of a pneumococcal surface antigen A mutant whole‐cell inactivated pneumococcal vaccine,” published in July 2019, is the winner of the Thermo Fisher Scientific Publication Award for 2019.2 Dr David and colleagues developed a new vaccination strategy against Streptococcus pneumoniae with the aim to enhance vaccine‐induced protection that is serotype independent. To achieve this aim, Dr David created a mutated and attenuated strain of S. pneumoniae, which after gamma irradiation was able to promote a more diverse and cross‐protective immune response than the wild‐type strain. Importantly, this whole‐cell vaccine did not require additional adjuvant, induced T helper 17 cell responses in the lungs and provided better protection of animals challenged with a heterologous strain than the gamma‐irradiated wild‐type strain did. This exciting work significantly advances pneumococcal vaccine development by revealing a new strategy to enable serotype‐independent protection.

The award‐winning papers by Drs Goodall and David highlight the outstanding quality of the work published in Immunology & Cell Biology. My very best congratulations are extended to the awardees on their success. I also thank our sponsors Wiley and Thermo Fisher Scientific for their continued support of outstanding science and scientists and the journal. It is hoped that the outstanding quality of these awarded publications will also encourage others to consider Immunology & Cell Biology as a key journal for their cutting‐edge research.

Katharine J Goodall
Shannon C David
